Introducing Pleasure People

Pleasure People is the series that uncovers the science of pleasure through real research and the people who lived it. A thousand people. Three weeks. One question science rarely asks outright: what does daily pleasure actually do for you?

In this 6-part limited audio series, hosted by veteran sex educator Danielle Bezalel, Pleasure People follows eight participants of a first-of-its-kind intervention study that tracked pleasure's impact on sleep, stress, relationship satisfaction, and so much more. You'll hear directly from these participants about what it was like to have pleasure assigned and the lasting impact the study had on their lives. The findings will surprise you.

Danielle is joined by Magic Wand study lead researcher Dr. Candice Hargons and legendary sex researcher Emily Nagoski, Ph.D. to unpack the layered effect pleasure has on quality of life, and why self-pleasure has gotten such a bad rap.

Julie: We know so much shit about men's bodies, and we just don't know enough about ours.

Sueann: When I'm not masturbating, I can tell that I'm stressed out.

Robi: Feeling my body suffused with pleasure has pushed aside the nagging knees.

DB: I'm Danielle Bezelal, aka DB. I have a master's of public health from Columbia University, and I'm a sex educator. I teamed up with Dr. Candice Hargons and the team behind the Magic Wand vibrator to run one of the largest pleasure studies ever done with 1,000 participants and over 100,000 data points.

In this series, we're going to cover topics that don't usually get talked about openly.

Robi: I mean, I might have squirmed in my seat with a pair of tight jeans on once or twice.

Binx: I'm always trying to seek the physical ways that you can experience freedom.

Mary: When you are in charge of your own pleasure, you are saying, "I'm in charge of my body. I'm in charge of how I feel, and I'm showing myself what I deserve."

DB: We'll interview experts and educators to understand why self-pleasure has gotten such a bad reputation in our culture.

Dr. Candice Hargons: This disinformation campaign about what sex toys do to your relationship.

Emily Nagoski, ph.D: We have been trying to dig ourselves out from under the rules that the Puritans thought were the right ones.

Dr. Candice Hargons: Queer people have better sex than heterosexual people and they have marginalization in their sexual identity.

DB: And we'll be going deep with eight of the participants in the Magic Wand study.

Mary: Do I feel guilty? Do I feel like I'm sinning?

Binx: Life is so short. You only get one, and I think you deserve to achieve the sensuality that you deserve and the pleasure that you deserve.
